What is Blue Light?

The basics

Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum — the range of light wavelengths our eyes can see. It sits at the shorter, higher-energy end of the spectrum, just above UV light. Sunlight contains blue light naturally, and so do LED screens: smartphones, tablets, computers, and TVs.

Blue light itself is not dangerous in ordinary amounts. The concern for screen users is about duration and proximity — children often hold screens close and use them for extended periods.

Blue light and children's screens

Children's screen time has increased significantly. Many children now spend several hours a day on tablets, computers, or phones for school and leisure. Blue light from screens is not proven to cause permanent eye damage, but prolonged screen use is associated with:

What do blue light lenses do?

Blue light filter lenses have a coating that selectively reduces the amount of high-energy blue wavelengths passing through the lens. They do not block all blue light — they reduce it to a level that many users find more comfortable for extended screen use.

Important: Blue light lenses are a comfort option, not a medical treatment. They will not correct vision problems or replace a prescription. The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds) remains the most evidence-backed way to reduce screen-related eye strain.

Is a blue light coating right for your child?

May help if your child…

  • Uses screens for 2+ hours daily
  • Reports tired or uncomfortable eyes after screen use
  • Uses a device in the evening before bed
  • Does significant homework on a screen

Not necessary if…

  • Screen time is limited and supervised
  • Your child has no complaints of eye fatigue
  • Budget is a priority (AR coating alone is effective)

All Reframify Kids lenses include anti-reflection coating as standard. Blue light protection is available as an add-on during lens configuration.
