What is Blue Light?
The basics
Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum — the range of light wavelengths our eyes can see. It sits at the shorter, higher-energy end of the spectrum, just above UV light. Sunlight contains blue light naturally, and so do LED screens: smartphones, tablets, computers, and TVs.
Blue light and children's screens
Children's screen time has increased significantly. Many children now spend several hours a day on tablets, computers, or phones for school and leisure. Blue light from screens is not proven to cause permanent eye damage, but prolonged screen use is associated with:
- Eye fatigue and discomfort
- Difficulty refocusing between near and distance tasks
- Disruption to sleep patterns if screens are used close to bedtime (blue light affects melatonin production)
What do blue light lenses do?
Blue light filter lenses have a coating that selectively reduces the amount of high-energy blue wavelengths passing through the lens. They do not block all blue light — they reduce it to a level that many users find more comfortable for extended screen use.
Is a blue light coating right for your child?
May help if your child…
- Uses screens for 2+ hours daily
- Reports tired or uncomfortable eyes after screen use
- Uses a device in the evening before bed
- Does significant homework on a screen
Not necessary if…
- Screen time is limited and supervised
- Your child has no complaints of eye fatigue
- Budget is a priority (AR coating alone is effective)
All Reframify Kids lenses include anti-reflection coating as standard. Blue light protection is available as an add-on during lens configuration.
